Description

Orange and black tribal looking patterned body. Large compound eyes. Smooth bodied. Approx the size of an average honey bee.

General information about Native Hover Fly :

The Native Drone Fly is a brightly coloured insect with large strange spotted eyes. The body is black and orange striped. They have a hovering flight and make a droning noise like a bee, hence the common name.

They feed on nectar therefore often found around flowers

It looks more like a type of fly that is a bee-mimic. The eyes and mouth parts are what gives it away. Bee eyes are much more narrow and slender, and appear quite different than those of flies, such as this is likely to be.
