This appears to be a species of inchworm, also known as a looper. There are different kinds of loopers though, so I would have to know what types of plants your's liked the best. They are the caterpillar of the Geometer Moth. Alternatively, it could be a cabbage looper, which isn't actually an inchworm, which is a caterpillar of the Noctuidae moth.
