Is this a scale insect?
Is this a scale insect? April 25, 2014
The insect (or maybe not even) is on our Gardinia potted bush (Ft. Lauderdale area). It is on the leaves and stems. It looks like a barnacle. What is this and how should we get rid of it? Thanks, Gary and Deborah Is this a scale insect?

Golden Silk Orb-Weaver
  Golden Silk Orb-Weaver March 02, 2014
Named for the color of the web, not the spider. The female is much larger than the male. The web can reach one meter wide After mating, the female spins an egg sac on a tree, laying hundreds of eggs in one sac. The spider will only bite if pinched. The bite causes local pain, redness, and blisters that normally disappear within a 24-hour interval. This single thread has a tensile that exceeds that of steel by a factor of six. The silk of N. clavipes has recently been used to help in mammali Golden Silk Orb-Weaver

Green-billed Toucan
  Green-billed Toucan March 01, 2014
The word Toucan comes from the Tupi word Tukana. There are about 40 species of Toucans, which include aracaris and toucanets. They grip with two toes on either side of their foot. The first and fourth toes are turned backward. Their wings are small, usually they measure the same distance as their beak to their tail. with their beak measuring about half of their body length. The bill is very light and is used as a thermoregulator. The serrations on the beak allow it to chew through almost any Green-billed Toucan

Found in Richmond, CA --male. "Male crickets are the only ones that chirp. They have ridges on their wings that they rub together that act like a comb and file to form an instrument. Their left forewing contains 50-300 teeth that are raised and angled. This wing is rubbed against the upper hind edge of the right forewing, or scraper. There are two types of songs that the male cricket produces. The calling song attracts females and repels other males and is very loud. The courting song is u field cricket
