field cricket
  field cricket April 28, 2013
Found in Richmond, CA --male. "Male crickets are the only ones that chirp. They have ridges on their wings that they rub together that act like a comb and file to form an instrument. Their left forewing contains 50-300 teeth that are raised and angled. This wing is rubbed against the upper hind edge of the right forewing, or scraper. There are two types of songs that the male cricket produces. The calling song attracts females and repels other males and is very loud. The courting song is u field cricket

Mayfly Larvae
  Mayfly Larvae August 28, 2012
Watch the video below. - - - - Mayflies are the fastest water to air transforming insect in the world. They swim up to the surface, and just jump out of their larval skin. Within a second or so, they are flying. This is because they are a very ancient group of insects, that many fish have made a living by eating them. The fish don't see them until they appear with their wings on the surface. They've been pressured to become faster and faster at escaping. They spend their larval stage under rock Mayfly Larvae

Large leafy insect July 21, 2012
Large insect. About 10-15cm long not including antennas. Wings almost exactly mimic long leaves. Back of abdomen a vivid pinky purple colour. Back legs look good for jumping but it doesn't look like a grasshopper. Perhaps some kind of leaf looking stick insect? Large leafy insect

Unknown nightshade pest
Unknown nightshade pest July 17, 2012
I find these on my eggplants and tomatoes. I believe the nymphs are black with thorny spines. They seem to be tended by ants, but they are not aphids (I don't think). I also believe that the adults are green and look like a round blade. They fly. Unknown nightshade pest

Seems to love tumble weeds. They must hold a lot of moisture and I think that is what it feeds on. They can grow quite large quickly when feeding on them. Epicauta maculata
