a tropical plant which resembles ginger in growth and habit, but is actually a relative of the wandering Jew plant. The plant is native to the tropical woodlands of North, Central and South America, specially in Atlantic Forest vegetation in Brazil. The leaves are depurative, diuretic, and febrifuge. Used as a throat gargle to relieve sore throats and tonsillitis. A decoction of the dried plant is used to treat bleeding, diarrhea, fever etc. Leaves, flowers and young shoots - raw or cooked. Chopped finely and added to salads or cooked as a potherb.
