The Lythraceae family consists mainly of tropical herbs and some shrubs or trees. There are 24 genera and 500 species. The leaves are simple, usually opposite or whorled. The flowers are strongly perigynous, actinomorphic or sometimes zygomorphic with 4, 6, or 8 petals. The petals are distinct and usually crumpled as in Crape Myrtle. There are usually twice as many stamens as petals. The fruit is usually capsular as in Pomegranates. Many plants in this family contain Alkaloids.
