Melastomataceae
The Melastome Family
Plantae Angiosperms Eudicots Rosids Myrtales
Melastomataceae includes herbs, shrubs, and trees. There are about 200 genera and 4,000 species. One easy way to recognize this family is the somewhat distinctive leaves. They are usually opposite from each other and decussate or perpindicular with the stem with 3-7 longitudinal veins that run from the base (or middle) of the blade to near the tip of the leaf in additional. The flowers are bisexual and are actinomorphic (radially symmetrical) or zygomorphic (bilaterally symmetrical). Most have 5 distinct petals and claw-like stamens. The fruit is a capsule or berry. This family includes some particularly aggresive invasive species, Micona and Koster\'s Curse, which have invaded tropical forests around the world.
