Can someone please help identify?
Location: Found in Central Valley of California in very hard dry soil. Ranch owner told me this fungus (?) has never surfaced in the 50+ years he's owned the property.

The larger one came through the ground looking very wood like and at first I thought it was a piece of wood. Then as it's growth progressed the smaller two came up. The two smaller took the shape of mushrooms which lead me to believe it was a species of fungus. As you can see in one picture the smaller two are now gone but the brown spores they left are stretching two feet in a line from each side of their location. This transformation happened over the 3-day weekend and I have been unable to locate the tops. In watching them grow, nothing is eating or digging at them and we are located in the country with lots of wildlife.
