Location: Growing out of the ground in a mixed oak/conifer forest in Northern California at 2450' elevation. Ground may be fill dirt in that area.

Chicken of the Woods grows on dead or mature hardwoods such as oak, cherry and beech from August to October or later.
It can also be found under conifers.
It can usually be found growing in clusters.

It reminds me of Laetiporus sulphureus, Chicken of the Woods, which is edible. I am not at all sure of what you have here though.
