Unknown Mushroom

Found this big glob of a fungus on my mulch under my Japanese Maple. It was very large -- about one and one half feet in length. Later it got red droplets. I have never been able to find out what it is.

I found an amazing site - your mushroom is listed as Hydnellum peckii complete with photo. the site is a professional photograhers site, name of Taylor Lockwood and is entitled 'Kingdom of Fungi'. It is facinating. I think lots of folks can get their scientific names of their mystery mushrooms by browsing through the info TL provides. the photos are stunning.

These strange forms of life add new wonders for even old folks! I've heard some of these slime molds can even follow a scent.

You are right gardengeek. It is actually very interesting. This one is Athalium of Fuligo septica. It is a plasmodial mass -- How neat is that. Some slime molds actually move -- they walk! Amazing.
