AKA cinder conk The sterile conk is irregularly formed and has the appearance of burnt charcoal. The fertile fruitbody can be found very rarely as a resupinate (crustose) fungus on or near the clinker, usually appearing after the host tree is completely dead. Herbalist David Winston maintains that it is the strongest anti-cancer medicinal mushroom. In 2005, I. obliquus was evaluated for its potential for protecting against oxidative damage to DNA in human lymphocytes. The study found that |

I have no idea what kind it is. Please help me identify it. I am extremely allergic to mold and I'm afraid these may be the culprit for my breathing attacks. They are grouped together and have skinny stems. They do have gills and not sponge/pores under the cap. The center of the cap is a light yellow and it seems to fade as it moves toward the edges of the cap. |

Cap on this picture is about 10-12 inches across. Others in group varied from 3 or 4 inches up. Smaller ones were closed, like the one Alice's caterpillar sat on, some were flat, the largest ones looked like this. None were red, the orange color was actually a lttle more vivid than this photo. This is a cell photo, I didn't have my camera along, so a friend snapped the pic. My ID problem is that the red ones are the large, but the yellow-orange ones aren't supposed to get this big. Any idea |

Green Fruticose Tree Lichen Wolf Lichen is poisonous, but it would take a bit to poison yourself. If you eat a small amount raw, it will taste so disgusting that you'd probably vomit or spit it out. If you do hold it down, you will get an incredibly painful stomache ache. All lichen will give you a stomache ache, you have to prepare them. Each lichen has a differing amounts of acid which requires a specific amount of neutralization. Most lichen is edible, (Wolf Lichen is not) but it must b |

Orange Chicken of the Woods Mushroom with white pigments Laetiporus is a genus of edible mushrooms found throughout much of the world. Some species are commonly known as sulphur shelf, chicken of the woods, the chicken mushroom, or the chicken fungus because many think they taste like chicken. The name "chicken of the woods" also refers to the edible polypore, Maitake (Grifola frondosa). The mushroom can be prepared in most ways that one can prepare chicken meat. It can also be use |

Strange, Tiny, Bowl-Like Fungus Pores. Often found in sawdust, woodchips, manure, or well enriched soil. Cup is striated. They are saprophytes (decomposers of organic material). The seeds are small capsules known as peridioles which contain the spores. -- A single drop of rain properly hitting the splash-cup can send the spore seed packs (peridioles) up to 7 feet away. On the underside of each peridiole there is a sticky filament that is coiled like a s |

Xanthoria elegans was one of the first lichens to be used for the rock-face dating method known as lichenometry. Lichen is a composite organisms consisting of a symbiotic association of a fungus which digests the rock and a photosynthetic partner which makes sugars from the sunlight, usually either a green alga or cyanobacterium. Given proper time, lichens can grow on just about anything. They are commonly found on unmoveable rocks. Lichen can be used to gauge air pollution, as they are ve |

AKA cryptogamic, microbiotic, microphytic, and cryptobiotic soil. This soil is alive, and very old. Crusts are predominantly composed of cyanobacteria (formerly known as blue-green algae), green and brown algae, mosses, and lichens. Liverworts, fungi, and bacteria can also be important components. Soil crusts are important members of desert ecosystems and contribute to the well-being of other plants by stabilizing sand and dirt, promoting moisture retention, and fixing atmospheric nitrogen |

Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric or fly Amanita, is a poisonous and psychoactive basidiomycete fungus, one of many in the genus Amanita. Native throughout the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere, Amanita muscaria has been unintentionally introduced to many countries in the Southern Hemisphere, generally as a symbiont with pine plantations, and is now a true cosmopolitan species. It associates with various deciduous and coniferous trees. The quintessential to |
