These range in size, the biggest getting to be about 5-6 inches so far. The tops seem to split and even start becoming concave, which might be a result of the air drying out. The middles of the caps have a slightly orangey-browny circle. The gills are brown and the stems are thin, and are the same whitesh cream color as the rest of the mushroom. |

While hiking through the mountains in Northern Alabama I came across this mushroom cluster. It looks like it's growing out of where a small tree had once been. |

The largest is about 14 inches wide. The smallest is only about 2 inches. One set on the log like a plate. The others were shelfed. The underside has different size pores. The small ones don't have black in the center and the very short stem is white. The large and mediums are black. The whole mushroom is spongy, soft and white meat. Anyone know? Suzanne |

Huge mushroom measuring almost 30cm across (That is a 30cm ruler on top of mushroom in the picture) Spongey and orange on top with mottled brown bottom curling up over the top. This mushroom was pretty battered by the time I found it and it looks like a bush turkey has been scratching and pecking at it. It shriveled up and died a couple of days after this picture was taken. |

Thought it was plastic when we approached it, then realized it was some kind of fungi. Pretty strange looking! Have not been able to identify it. |
