Grasshoppers
My garden has quite a few grasshoppers that are eating my split leaf philodendrum. How can I get rid of this pest?
Answer This Question
August 21, 2010

Entheogen
Domestic cats can live off of grasshoppers and other insects. Lubber grasshoppers however are toxic to just about all creatures. The best way is to remove them by hand. A large sheet or quilt can be used to round them up in larger numbers. Make sure you wear gloves, as some Lubbers spray toxins when threatened.
greengoddess
Yes, we have multiple bird feeders in our yard, but I'm talking BIG grasshoppers - Lubbers and they're about 6in long!! I'm not sure a bird could handle one of these monsters.
Biocentric333
Birds are natural predators of grasshoppers. Do you leave out multiple bird feeders?

I have some plants growing below my deck, possibly from seeds from a bird feeder, but I have no idea what they are. The leaves are deeply lobed like a watermelon leaf, it has bright yellow flowers with 5 petals and a long curved pistil, and the stems are covered with thorns. The plant is 6-8 inches in height. I am new to this website, but will try to upload some pictures.

We bought a house with a garden spot that is empty of plants. The soil smells horrible. Is there anything we can do to get rid of the odor? It is very near the house and smells so bad we can't sit on the porch!

Sounds like they've put manure down that wasn't ready. I would add something alkaline to it. If you have a fireplace, you can add the ashes. Lime will help neutralize the smell. Or you can dig out another area, then bury the stinky stuff there (mix it with various other organic stuff) to turn into compost, and use it next year.

Can I save a Hemlock tree? Can I save a Hemlock tree?

Dave
I have Hemlocks trees that are destroyed by these wolly blight bugs. Does anyone know if a tree can be brought back after these bugs have destroyed 80% of the pine needles? I don't want to waste time & money if they are unsavable.
Answer This Question
July 29, 2010

SuziQ
As long as there is live wood, I would go for it! Hemlocks can withstand hard pruning; i would get a pro to do it unless you are skilled, as they are big and often have dead branches collecting at the top. you MUST make sure all your pests are gone. You can use a combo of chemicals and natural predators to remove them. I also recommend that you spray the tree with water a couple of times a week to keep the woolies off. Chem works for about three years, but I would follow the advice on this webs

urine, especially female's, will kill grass...be careful!!

From what I know it might actually be good for plants. It adds Nitrogen and Urea to the soil, both are beneficial. If the animal is eating or drinking toxins, then it might add toxins to the soil.

Mushy Eggplant Fruit Mushy Eggplant Fruit

Jorge Rivas
We planted an eggplant about a month ago (early May/late April) here in deep South Texas. The plant is growing fast and producing quite a bit of fruit. We have not eaten any yet. We noticed that the fruit has golden streaks & is mushy. Is this how the fruit is supposed to be or are we doing something wrong? What do we need to do to make it firm
Answer This Question
June 15, 2010

gardengeek
Hi Jorge, It sounds like a type of blight or wilt. This usually happens from over-watering. Wait for a few days before watering or until the top of the soil is very dry. Look for tiny fungal hairs on the soil below and on the fruit. If you have a magnifying glass, take some pictures and upload them here. The sun can usually cook off most of the fungus, unless it is wet or in the shade. Thanks

The first step would be to identify what is eating them. If you want to upload images of the damage, that could help. If you go out a few hours after dark, you might spot the culprit.

Answer This Question

hi Tom, To manually pollinate a pumpkin, find the part of the flower that has dust-like particles on it. This is the pollen. Then you need to find the female flower of another plant, which will look a bit different than the male, and it won't have pollen falling from it. Just dab the pollen on the female part of the flower. The reason for the a paint brush is to simulate an insect crawling around in there. The female end of the flower or "Stigma" generates a static charge to pull the

explan where is the pollen and also why a brush. why wouldnt a q tip work need more info thanks tom k grand pa
Thunder
Try using a very soft, long bristled artists brush. If you have more than one variety or species to pollinate then use different brushes and label them so that you keep the pollen straight! Be sure to gather the pollen from the anthers and then get it down into the throat of the flower!

Okra crop is poor, why? Okra crop is poor, why?

Here in Montverde of Lake County near Orlando, I planted a spring garden; sends went into the ground the first week of April. My okra plants look wonderful, but they are very tough, long and dry, and very "woody" too stringy to eat - where did I go wrong? I live next to a lake and irrigation was using sprinklers for about 40 minutes daily. The soil drains nicely, damp but never wet. Soil was tilled twice before planting - tilled, fertilized with 666 and tilled again. Carrots did not even sprout, peppers did not sprout, Corn is looking good and black-eyed-peas, basil, runner-beans, squash are looking good. But the okra has beautiful foilage, but poor quality, dry, woody, stringy, and tough. Any ideas for next season? Cheers
