very tall brussle sprouts very tall brussle sprouts

we planted brussle sprouts in the spring, they have since then grown very tall and have fallen over on to other plants. Is it normal to have to cane them up?
Answer This Question

I don't think that it is normal for them to fall over.... I would imagine it means that they have a very shallow root system...could be caused by a number of things..... a common cause of shallow root systems is frequent, light watering...rather than less frequent heavier watering.... frequent and light watering encourages the roots to stay near the surface, so when the plant becomes large and heavy, it does not have a deep enough root system to hold it upright. When plants fall over

Have white ball shape mushrooms in flower bed that are approx. one to one and a half inch high and same in width. When they bloom for lack of a better word the bloom is orange and about 3" high and shaped like the old imperial butter crown with openings in between the connected parts. Have looked for pics but no luck yet.

my peach tree is loaded with not quite ripe fruit, but flies are eating the peaches before they fully ripen. I am losing a lot of fruit because of this. What can I, if anything, use to get rid of the flies? I am afraid of using sprays, not sure if they would be safe.

What I think you could try is to release beneficial insects designed to attack your attackers into your trees. Some of the common options are: ladybugs, praying mantises and spiders. There is usually a number of options that are suitable for a specific insect. I also read around that people put tree bands and crystals to help with their infestation. Insecticide tree bands are made to prevent some of the kinds of insects from climbing up the tree in order to breed or feed. They can help y

What kind of tree leaves are best for composting directly into the garden soil? Are there any tree leaves that I shouldn't compost? My garden is probably nitrogen rich. One clue is tomato skins splitting from where the tomato is attached to the vine. Also, I bury all kinds of vegetable/ fruit pieces, egg shells, coffee/ tea grounds in the garden.
Is it ok to compost tomatoes that are rotting on the vine?

Thank you,

Danny

I'm not sure what would be the best kind of leaves to compost with, but I am fairly certain that most varieties of leaves would be just fine. I grew up with a large garden, and every year we would take all the leaves from the many varieties of trees and bushes and churn them into the garden soil every fall. They would compost in the soil through the winter and we'd churn them in again in the spring. We had great harvests every year. We'd even include all the old flowers and fallen fruits as well

Was the scotch thistle called the rose of Scotland?
Answer This Question
August 01, 2009

lorincook
I'm not sure, but every reference I've heard of the rose of Scotland speaks of a white rose...probably due to a song called "Oh wee white rose of Scotland" funny thing is, Scottish people all say that they've never heard of a connection between roses and Scotland...though they do cite the thistle as a national symbol. It has been said that there are white varieties of thistle in Scotland...so who knows?

It has a type of mold, or fungus growing on it. There is probably too much water or moisture without time to completely dry. Fungus always grows in that pattern.

Sounds like you have white flies.....they are tiny little flies that are almost completely white in color....they lay their eggs on the undersides of leaves and suck the juice from them. Check the undersides of the leaves to see if there are teeny-tiny white dots that are somewhat oval-shaped. ....maybe this can help... http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060622060620AAVY0L0 As far as the gray stripes on the tomatoes... if they are raised and rough, that usually means that wa

Fusarium Wilt Description: Fusarium wilt initially causes a yellowing and wilting of lower leaves, especially in tomato and potato plants. Sometimes only one branch or one side of the plant is affected. Infected plants usually die. This tomato plant wilt disease is caused by the soil inhabitating fungi of the fusarium species known as fusarium oxysporum. This is a species of fusarium wilt which only attacks tomato plants. Any plants, which show signs of infection, must be destroyed immediately

I was given a Bamboo Plant one of its stocks is going yellow about half way up the stock and keeps moving up. I did look up the care of bamboo Plants on the enternet, was interested in finding out may not be getting enough water and I have been giving it tap water I din't know not to (our tap is very High in minerals), I know now to give it distilled water but will the health of the plant restore itself or will it die?
Answer This Question
July 12, 2009

heidbenati
Is your bamboo close to the window? Some people have tried putting it away from the window to avoid too much sunlight, which helps in restoring the plant. Also, some people cut the stalk right above the yellow, so it does not spread to the rest of the plant. I found this tip: Tip: You can add nutrients to water by adding air to the water. Place the water in the blender or shake up the water in a clean jug or cup.

cutting back cactus
I have a variety of paddle cactus that is growing like crazy. I want to cut and replant the cuttings. how do I do that.
Answer This Question
July 10, 2009

gardengeek
It's also good to completely dry the cuttings for a few days before replanting. While the pads are drying and when you plant them, make sure you keep them oriented the same way they originally were, or it will take them a lot longer to establish.
gardengeek
Just cut off a side pad near the main stem with a sharp razor/knife. Prepare a pot or location with sandy or rocky soil, the cactus likes to be dry most of the time. I find that placing a good-sized rock right next to, or right on top with the pad angling out from under it, helps to get the cactus started. It stabilizes the soil and keeps the cactus secured until it can grow roots.

Is it hot in your area?...Broccoli does not tolerate heat very well, and when it feels that it is too hot, it may try to preserve it's energy by not making any fruit.

hi, i have lanvender, the question i have is the bottom of the plant/bush looks very thin, while the top of the bush is producing green leaf and the purple flower like normal, but the bottom is thin and looks woody and all the leaj down there is brown and dead help!!!!

It is hard to do sometimes but I would cut it back and it should sprout new branches from the woody part. If it is blooming now and you don't want to do it now you should cut it back very early next year down to the woody part. It will then be bushier for the season. Good luck!

Herbs. seem to be cutting my herbs wrong so much so they die. I was trying to cut of the flowers forming on the basil and the cilantro but may have killed the herbs by cutting to much of the stems. When i want to use cilantro and basil - do i cut the stems or just pull the leaves off. I don't want to kill the mint. I pick off the leaves now. What is the best way to cut herbs for use? and cut flowers off so as to stop the herbs spoiling?
Answer This Question
July 05, 2009

lorincook
It seems that the best way in my experience has been to cut or pinch off the stem... right above a node where the stem branches apart... then pick the leaves off of the stem if needed...but removing the stem encourages the plant to produce more stems and leaves....which is just what you want for an herb plant.

black spots on mint
I have a lot of wild mint in my yard, which I love. For the past three seasons, it has been getting black spots on the leaves and then the plant seems to wilt. They always come back the next year, but I don't like to use the mint with these spots. What are the spots? Does it make the mint unusable and how can I get rid of it? The spots have spread to the oregano that is next to it.
