I would say certainly do not eat any wild mushrooms unless you are absolutely certain that you know what type of mushroom it is. You can take a picture of the mushroom and post it to the site? That way other members may be able to identify it.

Hi Judy, it sounds like a form of shelf mushroom, but depending on the type of wood, among other things, it could even be edible. If you upload an image the whole community can take a look, we would help you out. :)

Hello Kathleen, Yes, Datura spp. (such as the Devil’s or Angel Trumpet, Thornapple, Jimsonweed) is one of the plants that are repellents for deers. Check out this blog that has a huge list of deer repellents and some recipes http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/gloriag/12478/ Good Luck !

Golden Mushroom. Help Identify! Golden Mushroom. Help Identify!

I need help identifying a mushroom. I have pictures. The mushroom has a large cap, 3" to 9" across, is golden colored, has forked golden gills decurrent down the stem, and exudes orange "milk". It grows in a clump on wood, I think. It is hard to tell, because it is in a muclched bed full of wood chips. It has a wavy edged cap, which has some brown spots and almost lines around. Cap, flesh and gills are all gold. Flesh a little lighter. It has no knobs or conical shape like the Jack-O-Lantern, but it it luminescent, when viewed in the dark. It is subtle, but it glows sort of beige or pinkish, like it is gently lit from within. I'll send pictures, if you need them. I was fascinated by this mushroom and would like to identify it. I thought it might be a Honey Mushroom or Lactarius Deliciosus, but I was stumped by the luminescence, but it doesn't glow blue/green like the Jack-O-Lantern. Please help me identify.
thanks,
Faye

How do I save the seeds of the most delicious heirloom tomato I've ever eaten ?
Answer This Question

Hi Jackie, The process can be a bit involved, but briefly, you would want to mix the center of the tomato in a jar with water (create a small whole for air circulation). You can also use bags. Then, you would let the mixture rot in a warm area for about 3-4 days. After it looks brown and yucky, separate the seeds from the rest of the gunk. Let the seeds dry for about a week. Store the seeds in paper bags only after they are completely dry. FYI: The most common mistakes are usually: not d

what can i used to control weeds on the lawn without destroying the grass
Answer This Question

There are some products that you should be able to purchase from your local nursery that selectively kill common lawn weeds without damaging the grass. Alternatively you can just pull them out by hand. I once met an ingenious woman who paid her children 1 cent per weed they pulled out.

I planted last fall garlic and I harvested this last spring but it looks like I did not harvested all of it, because now there is garlic coming up. There are some that are already about 2 feet tall and there are others that have come up very close together in groups that are about 10 inches tall.
My question is if I should separate those that are coming up in groups and re-plant them separately or just let it be ?
Thank you for your earliest attention to this matter.

Breaking them apart may cause some of the separated bulbs to grow a bit larger, but at this late stage in their development, they haven't much more to grow, so I don't imagine it will make much difference now. Maybe you could try it next year with the garlic that results from these bulbs...

I have 3 fern lillies in pots. I live in Colorado and want to know what I should do with them for winter. Thank you!
Answer This Question

lorincook
It really depends on what kind of ferns you have. If they are tropical, house plant type ferns, then you will need to bring them in the first night that frost is predicted. Any house plant/container soil can be used for repotting. If they are actually hardy, outdoor ferns, then those ferns need to have a dormant period during the winter in a cool, dark place. Basement root cellars or garages are good places to put container grown hardy ferns for the winter. If you live in an apartment, you cou

I purchased Roberta's Exotic Banana plant through QVC and it is doing extremely well and I am in zone 5 (Omaha NE) and we are preparing for a frost this wk.end and I would like info on how to winterize it. Please let me know what I need to do, as this plant is now reaching about 4-5 ft. and I don't want to lose it. I absolutely love it. Thank you. Diane
Answer This Question

lorincook
Banana plants will need to move indoors for the winter since they will certainly not tolerate frosts or cold temperatures. Keep them in the most sunny place possible indoors, as they do not do well in too much shade. Some suggest supplementing window light with a grow light if no sunny window are available. Indoors, your banana will be very attractive, but flowers and fruit are not likely unless you have a hothouse.

I need to identify a tree with green leaves growin in Maryland, and right now bearing a ripe round fruit about the size of strawberies with a more spikey surface, which obviously fall to the ground when they are red and ripe. They are soft and slightly sweet in taste..I picked them off the ground and also from the tree but I don't know how to use them for eating. Can you suggest what the tree might be and what to do with the fruit?

I left a beautiful, healthy Encore Azalea in a pot with a neighbor to water for 2 weeks I was away. The plant is now dying branch by branch. I've given it (separately) Superthrive, acid & fish emulsion. Nothing is stopping the dying. The leaves wilt & a branch dies. I'm tempted to take it out of the pot and look at the roots. Do you have any suggestions. kmead
Answer This Question

lorincook
Not sure what it is...perhaps it's watering schedule was altered while you were gone. Leaves that turn brown, die and drop off during the summer usually indicate a problem with the azalea. The problem may be too little water, too much water, or too much fertilizer. If the azalea was recently planted, dig it up and check the rootball for moisture, and for the general state of the roots, which should be firm and crisp. Brown and mushy roots may indicate too much water. They may also indicate one
