Oregon-grape (Mahonia aquifolium, Berberidaceae) is an evergreen shrub related to the barberry.
The Oregon-grape is not closely related to grapes, but gets its name from the purple clusters of berries whose color and slightly dusted appearance is reminiscent of grapes. Raw, they taste like a sour pomegranate, quite palatable actually. After you eat a few they start to loose their sour taste. Medicinal:
The root can be used as a yellow dye, and is an excellent antioxidant. The berries can make a purple dye. anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial used in the treatment of infection speeding recovery from giardia, candida, viral diarrhea, and cholera treatment on inflammatory skin diseases such as Eczema and Psoriasis , anticancer properties ,alterative, diuretic, laxative and tonic. Works to decrease bacterial resistance to antibiotics and antibacterial agents. Mahonia aquifolium is also known to be capable of treatment on inflammatory skin diseases such as Eczema and Psoriasis.
