Location

Native to northwestern China and Japan.

Physical Description
Butterfly bushes can get 6'-12' tall and have a spread of 4'-15'. Blooms on butterfly bushes can be purple, pink, white, or red, and they usually have an orange "throat" in the center. Butterfly bush plants will bloom throughout the summer. Leaves are lance-shaped and grayish-green.



General Information

Medicinal Uses: Febrifuge. The flowers and flower buds are antispasmodic, slightly cholagogue and ophthalmic. They have an action similar to vitamin P, reducing the permeability and fragility of the blood vessels of the skin and small intestine. They are used in the treatment of various eye problems. They are also used in the treatment of gonorrhea, hepatitis, and hernia. A decoction of the leaves is used in the treatment of collyrium. Also used in the treatment of gonorrhea, hepatitis and hernia

Other Uses: Black or green dyes can be obtained from the flowers, leaves and stems combined. An orange-gold to brown dye can be obtained from the flowers

The top butterfly....the silver-copper one, is the spicebush swallowtail, you will only see it in areas that have spicebushes (which we have near here!)

That is a dazzling image of the silver-copper butterfly, I'm not sure what it is called...
the others are: European Cabbage Butterfly, Silver-spotted Skipper, American Painted Lady.
