Other names are Mountain White Birch or Eastern Paper Birch. This tree used to be thought of as the same species as papyrifera - the paper birch - and can be hard to identify. The bark is white and the inner surface is bright bronze. The leaves are alternate and double toothed; one thing that differentiates them from the paper birch is that the leaves of the Mountain birch have tiny numerous resin glands on the leaves. cordifolia The Mountai paper birch is only found in the eastern part of North America, and likes a northern or high elevation climate with moist earth. Another way to differntiate it from the paper birch is that the new and young shoots are NOT hairy.

Comment: Papery Birch, Betula cordifolia

It was about 20 feet high. Shaped tightly. Didn't see the catkins. The picture is from Utah.
