Location

Florida, smack in the middle of my liriope cover. The bulbs are shaded by the thick liriope during the rest of the year until the Summer when the stalks/flowers shoot out of nowhere seemingly overnight.

Physical Description

This is a bulb. Must be a lily of some type. The flower sits atop a single thin stalk with no leaves. The flower has 6 petals and my variety is pink to pinkish white. It flowers once a year around the beginning of Summer seemingly after a good hard rain. The flowers shoot up as a tight hot pink bud and with the morning sun they open. There are no leaves at all. Just a bulb, a stalk, and one flower. At night they droop and close up a bit and then again in the morning they open up beautifully. They only last about 3 or 4 days before they are gone until next year.

I found it!! Yay! It is Zephyranthes grandiflora or Rain Lily. I found the info on www.floridata.com in case the following link does not work.

The gladious seem to be mostly multiple blooms up and down the stalk. This is a very simple bulb. No leaves what-so-ever, single thin stalk, single bloom at the top. Thank you for your comment.

no. this is not a daylily. totally different structure altogether. this is a single stalk with a single flower. the photos of the daylilys that I say were multiple blooms on each stalk. Also the petal texture and shape are completely different. Thank you for your comment however.

I know these as "Day Lily" as they only seem to last for a short perid of time. Usually pale pink to white but can get to be slightly dark pink.

I was thinking lily too, but maybe a type of gladious? The stamen and stigma are more like a glad. I will see if I can find a single flowered variety.
