It's Latin name is Cuscuta pentagona. It is in the Cuscutaceae – Dodder family.
Where I grew up we called it goldthread. In research I found all these other common names: devil’s guts, devil’s hair, devil’s ringlet, hailweed, hairweed, hellbine, love vine, pull-down, strangle weed, angel hair, witch’s hair, five angled dodder, strangle vine, witch’s shoelaces.
Dodder is parasitic, obtaining nutrients from host plants. Native Americans crushed and boiled the stems to make a yellowish-orange dye used to color feathers.Pawnee girls would throw the vine behind them and if it re-attached to the host plant they would know their suitor was sincere.
