This shrub was growing in front of a house in North Portland, Oregon. The hydrangea is native to southern and eastern Asia and North and South America. The diversity is greatest in China, Japan and Korea.
Hydrangea flowering shrubs grow anywhere from 1 - 3 meters tall. Depending on the species the flower formation may be 'mophead', which looks like a pompom, and 'lacecap'. This flower formation of this species is described by the latter bearing "round, flat flowerheads (corymbs or panicles) with a center core of subdued, fertile flowers surrounded by outer rings of showy, sterile flowers." Hydrangea flowers bloom from early spring through late fall. The coloration depends on the pH of the soil. Acidic soil will produce flowers which appear to be blue, neutral pH will produce pale petals, and alkaline soils produce flowers which appear pink to purple. The hydrangea is known as a hyperaccumulator and the change in pigment depends on the amount of aluminum ions present in the soil. The roots and leaves of certain Hydrangea species are known to have some medicinal value. However, it is also known to be moderately toxic, so ingestion is not recommended.
