Shrub

Location

My yard, everywhere on the UC Berkeley Campus. It is not purposely planted anywhere but sprouts randomly.

Physical Description
These weren't planted but have been sprouting everywhere in my yard and around Berkeley. They are kind of beautiful (mostly due to the orange flower) and grew very quickly. Seems to prefer partially shaded areas.

the plant is very thin width-wise. It looks almost 2 dimensional from the side

it\'s been raining so I couldn\'t get the veins to light up. There is one central vein with many little parallel ones

It's not the same as the plant below, your plant a monocot.

It looks like an exotic tropical dicot of some sort. Could you get close-ups of the leaf venation? If you angle the camera, the sun, and the leaf just right, you can light up the leaf to see all the veins, like this picture:

Also any close-ups of the insides of the flower, and the flower buds would help.
