Said to be of asian origin.

Physical Description
annual, hooded blossom under lance shape leaf, multiple stalks, rounded growth to 2.5-3 feet by 2 feet, in zone 7. Some plants have white blossoms, some have fucshia color blossoms. Fat seed pods explode when touched.

Blooms all summer until end Sept., self seeds. Attracts bees, deer resistant.

thank you - a garden friend was just able to tell me, and I then found many images online to confirm it's impatiens balsamina. He'd earlier suggested it's lady slipper, but when I searched images of 'lady slipper' they didn't match what I have. Was so glad to find this site, as I was giving up hope of ever figuring it out. I share the seeds with friends, but couldn't tell them what they were getting.
