Native to Mexico and Central America. It now ranges all of North America

Physical Description
Like all morning glories the plant entwines itself around structures with its viney stems, growing to a height of 2-3 m tall. The leaves are heart-shaped and the stems are covered with brown hairs. The flowers are trumpet-shaped, predominantly blue to purple or white, 3-6 cm diameter.

General Information

Ipomoea purpurea was brought to the American colonies about 1700, and was spread by way of garden peddlers and small-town milliners throughout the countryside

Medicinal Uses: The seed is anthelmintic, diuretic, and laxative. It is used in the treatment of oedema, oliguria, ascariasis and constipation. The seed contains small quantities of the hallucinogen LSA. This has been used medicinally in the treatment of various mental disorders

Though most often noted as a drug, the lysergamides are also of medical importance. Ergonovine enhances the action of oxytocin, used to still postpartum bleeding. Ergine induces drowsiness and a relaxed state and might be useful in treating anxiety disorder. Whether Ipomoea species are a useful source of these compounds remains to be determined
