The first crocus seen in the Netherlands, where Crocus species are not native, were from corms brought back from Constantinople by the Holy Roman Emperor's ambassador to the Syblime Porte, Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq, in the 1560s. A few corms were forwarded to Carolus Clusius at the botanical garden in Leiden. All parts of the plant contain a glycoside called wisterin which is toxic if ingested and may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pains, and diarrhea. Wisterias have caused poisoning in children of many countries, producing mild to severe gastroenteritis. |

The common name, Larkspur, is shared with the closely related genus Consolida. The scientific name comes from the Latin for dolphin, alluding to the shape of the opening flower. It was one of the herbs used on the feast of St. John and as such warded against lightning. |
